The slack in Slacker Shack has reared it’s head this last six weeks and I’ve not been blogging quite so much. Two weeks ago I finished a new playlist of head turning, brain tickling joys and I’ve been too busy to share it. But it’s here now, better late than never.
As ever I’m focused on slightly more ‘under the radar’ music – stuff that clearly deserves more universal love and attention, keeps drawing me back for more, and is fresh out the baker’s oven.
May’s Top 20 includes some psych-rock magic from the likes of Toronto’s Lammping (‘Golem Of Garbage Hill‘), The High Water Marks (‘Fantastic Machine‘), Philadelphian garage rockers, The Mary Veils (‘Esoteric Hex‘), Dactyl Terra (‘Tsunami Go!‘), Andrew Cashen (‘Trouble Maker‘), the psych drenched Solilians (‘Klezmische‘), and the stunning space rock of Brothers Griiin and Spaceface (‘Future Thoughts‘).
Songs that recall the heyday of early 90’s slacker rock – Slacker Shack regulars, We Are Joiners (‘Liquorice‘), The Jojo Man Band (‘Amazing‘), Riddle M (‘Soft & Sweet‘) and Battle Ave. (‘i saw the egg‘). Four acts I’ve been keeping a wonky close eye on for a while now.
Texan indie rockers, Good Looks kick off the playlist this time around and ‘Bummer Year’ is a tune that strikes loads of lyrical chords for me – it’s brilliantly observed and written. They’re a band I’m totally new to and instantly intrigued by. Other acts I’m new to that make the playlist include, the “maximalist yacht metal” (titter) of Mythless (‘Dreadless‘), the honey soaked psych-folk of Tomato Flower (‘World To Come‘), the hypnotic alt-pop wonkiness of ORANGEPURPLEBEACH (‘exposure‘), bleep friendly lo-fi indietronica from Rodney Cromwell (‘Wristwatch Television‘), the heady psych-funk of Manchester’s Caulbearers and Ruth Blake (‘Twisted Cord‘), the New York, post-punk cool of Grim Streaker (‘Lover‘), and GOON’s slice of hazy indie-pop brilliance, ‘Hi From Beyond‘.
And the most peculiar tune of the month? I reckon that prized crown goes to Mexican songwriter, Gruno and his swampy, slacker-funk, trip-hop mini masterpiece, ‘Dealer Chamán‘. It’s the kind of stoner in the skunk mist lullaby that echoes round in your head for days. Check it, and the rest of the wondrous playlist below:
